Take home whitening is popular as your whitening can happen when you’re in your pyjamas watching the TV, having a lazy Sunday, or even out for a walk with the dog. Its convenience means you can whiten when it suits you. It’s a straightforward procedure which our dentists perform hundreds of times a year, and goes roughly like this:
Initial consultation
We’ll discuss your options with you and assess your overall oral health including the condition of your teeth, gums, and mouth. If there are any significant issues, we’ll need to address these first. If you’re a good candidate for take home whitening, we’ll then:
Take a 3D digital scan of your teeth and make your trays
Our dentists will take a scan of your teeth. We’ll use this to create your trays, which are custom-fitted to your mouth, and will hold the whitening gel when you’re at home. It’s important that these are a perfect fit to minimise any irritation.
Give instructions for your whitening
At this point we’ll give you instructions both verbal and written on how to use the trays, you can ask any questions, and you can now whiten at home.
You whiten at home
You’ll whiten at home with your trays and gel for the prescribed amount of time, usually 2 hours a day for 2 weeks. You can buy more whitening gels if we feel your teeth can still get lighter.
Check in with us
Depending on your desired level of whiteness, we’ll need to check in every so often to check everything is OK and you aren’t experiencing any issues.

Once you’re happy with your smile, you really have something to smile about! Maintain good oral hygiene to extend the period of time that your new pearly whites stay pearly white.
Aftercare and maintaining your new smile
Take home whitening kits often keep your teeth pearly white for as long as twelve months before you feel the need to do a quick top up, so long as they are looked after properly, meaning you can flaunt your new smile for as long as possible. Avoid staining foods and drinks
Foods which are strongly coloured such as turmeric, red wine, tea, coffee, should be avoided for at least two hours after every whitening application. It’s pretty common sense that the more of these foods you consume the sooner you may want to top up the whiteness.
Avoid smoking
Smoking is generally negative for your oral and wider health and should be avoided. It causes staining of teeth – among other long-term health issues.
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene
Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and keep up regular appointments with your dentist, particularly if you experience ongoing sensitivity. Catching potential issues early will prolong both your teeth and your whitening.
Rinse after eating
Particularly when eating staining foods as above, but it’s generally good practice to rinse teeth after eating.
